After about a decade as an engineering leader and CTO, I focused entirely on Product Management nearly 15 years ago. Since then, when working with product teams, I sometimes referred to tools, frameworks, and approaches they wouldn’t know. So they asked, and I happily explained. After that happened repeatedly, it occurred to me it might be a good idea to collect, organize and share relevant material to get into the Product Management craft — the content that I, Mario, personally found most valuable during my career.
To share ideas, document tools, and processes, I initially published the Product Management Curriculum, a FREE collection of frameworks, approaches, and tools around our domain. After having used it for several years, with more experience from hiring and onboarding teams, it is about time to rework and include a broader perspective from multiple authors. Last but not least, tools and frameworks have evolved a lot and, hence, an update is required.
For us, Product Management is not a science — too many unknowns prevent systematic success. Likewise, Product Management is not an art — because then every success would be truly unique with no chance of repeating it.
Instead, we consider Product Management as a craft: You need to learn all the tools, how to use them, and their limitations to then be able to select the right tool depending on context and task.
Only you know what works at your company, not a specific framework or tool. Or as one of the thought leaders of Product Management describes it:
People are always searching for a silver bullet to create products, and there is always a willing industry — ready and waiting to serve with books, coaching, training, and consulting. But there is no silver bullet, and inevitably people figure this out.

Of course, when you are already familiar with some concepts, you can jump to those chapters that are relevant to you. Also, when you are very early in your career, consider skipping Part 2 initially and reading it later after you have understood the more foundational elements of Product Management.

As Product Managers, we constantly refer to agile working methods, aim for fast and incremental deliveries, and strive for continuous improvements. Yet, most Product Management literature is published in a very traditional way: It is drafted, reviewed, printed, and published on paper and hardly ever changed (apart from later editions)—very much like software built in the 1960s. We believe this is a paradox.
Instead, we want to handle this playbook more as a living document: Similarly to how software products are being released and updated, we also plan to extend the scope step by step, add more content over time, address questions that might come up (and maybe ship one or the other bug fix).
